Yesterday, I went to the Women’s Leadership exchange here in town. It was very inspirational! While many of the women there were entrepreneurs, I am very happy where I am at right now. However, I am starting now so in the future I have the skills to start my own business someday and write a book. I went to a seminar from a woman here in town that has sold 7 of her businesses and from a former newscaster about how to do interview and speak about what you do. Also, I worked on networking with many interesting women around town. The biggest impact of the day though was a speaker that wrote the book “The Power of Nice”, Robin Koval. She described a “rudeness epidemic” in the workplace – and think about the last time you were cut off on the freeway what happened! Some of the principles were:
1. Positive implants are like seeds, and what will happen 10, 20, 30 years from now.
2. You never know who you are meeting. Example given of the founders of You Tube, who may look just normal but are billionaires.
3. Negative impressions are like germs – you can never get away from them (think you tube and the web)
4. Shut up and listen. Apparently, Larry King said “I never learned anything while I was talking”
5. Sweeten the deal – gifts, chocolate in the office and at meetings are a wonderful idea!
6. Help your enemies, stop keeping score
7. What goes around comes around, and you will always know if you have done something unkind even if the person does not find out.
